Gay Marriages Threaten Americalifornia
Posted: June 18th, 2008 | Author: Sam | Filed under: Blog Posts, Homosexuality |I love Scalzi’s take on gay marriages and have little more to add. That (Some) Christians actually believe that gay marriage in some way affects their ability to remain married is perhaps the stupidest claim in the history of stupid claims made by (Some) Christians. In no way does gay marriage do anything to undermine marriage; it only strengthens it.
But I do have a procedural question: how does the California amendment get around the illegality of ex post facto laws? Here’s more on the relative legality of such laws in America.
Even if the state of California votes to outlaw gay marriage - and here’s hoping that they don’t - it cannot possibly force divorce onto all of the citizens who are legally marrying right now, can it? I don’t know the specifics, because I’m not a filthy lawyer, but as nearly as I can tell, courts have only allowed these types of laws when physical danger was feared. Gay marriages, besides not tearing down the institution of marriage, in no way threatens physical danger.
(Some) Christians really need to start being honest about what taking anti-gay marriage positions mean: they hate gays. That’s the only real way to understand it. Scalzi’s points - about forcing legally married couples to lose their legal protection - are excellent. Meanwhile, I’ll continue to hope (Some) Christians engage me in debates like these, because I’ll eviscerate them seven ways from Sunday.
Many Christians are just plain selfish on this issue. They believe that America is prosperous because it is a Christian nation. They believe God smiles on us. They fear that if wicked behavior becomes legal God will stop smiling on us and then poof! their prosperity will be gone in a cloud of fire and brimstone.
There are several flaws with this way of thinking. First, God never promised prosperity to the righteous. Second, American is not a Christian nation. Third, the concept of a “Christian nation” or even God’s legitimizing of some governments is not in the Bible. Next, wicked behavior is not always punished by God in the here-and-now. Most punishment has been reserved for the by-and-by. Finally, for a religion that is supposed to be founded upon legitimate altruism, selfishness or concern for self in this way, is the most wicked attitude a person can adopt.
